In the past these caves, which are now a monastery complex of two parts - the Lower and Upper Monastery, with churches of Blessed Virgin Mary and the Life-Giving Cross carved in the rock, were the homes of the Ostrog monks. Construction of the lower part of the monastery began in the 18th century.
